Oneirica

I’ve been recording my dreams since my mid teens. Giving little importance to long narratives, my attention goes to words, phrases and objects that appear in my dreams and which I try to depict with utmost accuracy.

The oneiric image is enigmatic, unexpected and powerful; it has a unique way of revealing itself to my loving welcoming in the dynamic of the dream; it is pure, unaltered by rational intervention and subject to its own laws and patterns.

I am admiring a small sculpture, half white, half reddish, of what looks to me a male and a female joined by a leaf and with the male having reaching hands directed to the female side.

I am admiring the white sculpture as seen in this image; a white, slightly textured object, suspended in the air rather than hanging on a wall.

Dan Stanciu was holding a big open book; he was looking in it and was dissatisfied with a word that was "too short." I suggested to him: "Lengthen it on iron!" Dan smiled to me approvingly.

Sasha Vlad wrote Dan Stanciu
about this dream, then Dan
produced a “lengthened word”
to complete the dream:

Dream of February 12, 2018

I am with G.R., walking on a promenade of concrete, along the seashore. There is total darkness except for a strip of mysterious bright light shining from above along the promenade.

Low waves are breaking against the concrete, bringing frothy ice. I'm hoping to find some seashells or pebbles to keep in souvenir of this moment, but there is only wet sand everywhere.

Suddenly I see three small seashells washed by the waves near the promenade. I pick them up and, to my amazement, I see they have ridges describing simplified human features. I remember distinctly two smaller shells in the shape of pentagons with rounded corners and a much larger one, a double clam with a little face on the side, close to its joint.

Three new shells appear in the sand in the same spot and I pick up those too, as three new ones are replacing them immediately.  I get those as well - now I  have nine different shells with human features and think in regret that I cannot pick up any additional ones (as new shells are appearing again in the sand):  my hands are full and I have no pockets or a bag where to put more of them.

In each group of three, two new shells have new shapes while the third is a pentagonal one.

I am very excited with my found treasure of marvelous shells and I wake up  in great joy.

I dreamed of one of my recurring character-objects. Here, on its white surface and gradually decreasing in size toward the head, there were carved four-petal rosettes, each one sitting on a raised disk. On the head of the character-object a knotted thin scarf was floating in the air; out of it a miniature tree was growing, leafless and with a slightly conical trunk.

I am looking at two character-objects: both have ovoidal, shiny faces, with no anatomical details, concave and empty, black bodies. There are three bright bands of yellow, red and white light surrounding them. Inside each concave body a green plant is growing straight in the middle and sustaining the heads, like columns. In one of the plants the leaves are tight and curving onto each other; in the other one the leaves are flat and at a small distance from each other.

I am in front of a store window showing skirts made of glass, of various sizes and shapes, mostly blue and green in color. I am admiring them and wondering which would fit me best; in spite the rigidity of the material, I am sure the skirts are quite comfortable to wear.

A premonitory dream, January 28, 1986

Dream Jan.28-1986.jpg

My mother and I find ourselves inside a huge glass cube, at the top of a barren, rather narrow, mountain peak. We are surrounded by many similar but thinner, pointed, rocky peaks.

Mother and I are looking at a huge ball of smoke and fire high above us. An explosion, it seems; active and dynamic, but contained in its globular shape. As we’re watching it in amazement, mother and I feel safe inside the glass cube.

I woke up from this dream around 5 am, as I was in the habit of starting painting as early in the day as possible. At noontime I paused for lunch and turned on the TV. The explosion of the Space shuttle Challenger was announced in the news. It had happened at 11:39 am eastern time, at Cape Canaveral (Florida), 73 seconds after liftoff (and roughly 7 hours later than my dream). The explosion looked like a ball of smoke and fire, with arms shooting off it.

I am holding in my hand a black felt hat, curiously shaped like an elongated, curved tear. I’m supposed to wear it with my hair braided and laid carefully inside.

While walking in a park, I get to a huge fountain, in the shape of a classic Greek or Roman sculpture. It’s front is open from under the nose down to the upper part of the breasts, revealing rocks and a cascade running inside.

Dream of April 2, 1983

I find myself on a flat, smooth, vast land. In front of me is an anthropomorphic chair with three live heads and forearms as rests. Nearby there is another similar chair, but with the forearms on the seat part.

A year later, inspired by this dream of April 2, 1983, I did this Untitled mixed media drawing.

I am looking at myself in a mirror and being quite intrigued by the additional pair of breasts I see on my back, opposite the frontal ones

Dream of June 19, 1980

DreamJune19.1980.jpg

I am at the top of the stairwell of an industrial building with several floors. The building is either unfinished or delapidated.

On the right side of the stairwell there is the structure of the building, depleted of walls and floors, but with a good many pipes and electric wires everywhere. There is almost total darkness, but I have a good sense, rather intuitive, of the entire space going down and around me.

On the left side of the stairwell there is a continuous, solid wall, with a single door opening. Light is coming through it, from a big, empty room. There is a big hole (depression ) in the floor, in the shape of a ridged, truncated cone, about 30 cm deep and 90 cm in diameter.

Going one flight of stairs down, there is an identical wall and lit room to the one above. Only here, I see the missing shape from the floor above is lying on the floor, in the corresponding spot.

I go down one more flight of stairs and find a third identical wall and room. But here, mounted on a vertical pole, the same ridged truncated cone is interconnected to several smaller gearwheels and all work together in a slow motion.

Dream of January 18, 1980

Personage in the dream of January 18, 1980.jpg

I am at a country fair where there is perfect silence. The first sounds are heard from afar with a group of musicians; they are walking toward me. As they come closer I see among them a part human part jug character. The jug has a big sword for a handle and, on the opposite side, a spout in the shape of a rabbit with the mouth open. The human head in sunken in up to its nose into the mouth of the jug. There are human full legs and a single arm holding a dagger; it is swung in the air menacingly and pointed at me under the threat to place the ball in the rabbit's mouth, to prevent wine spilling from the jug. Even though no words are spoken, I know what this is about and I place the ball (which somehow is in my hand) in the mouth of the spout.
